Following last week’s announcement by P&O Ferries, the Port of Dover has been exploring the range of ways it can offer help and support to former crew members.
Doug Bannister, CEO of the Port of Dover, said: “The port community in Dover is close-knit and we are home to the largest local employment site in the area. It is right that we look at what support we can give at this difficult time and that we work with our partners to reach out to those affected by last week’s announcement.”
As well as actively signposting a number of current job vacancies which might be directly suitable, the Port is also keen to hear from those who might not meet all of the necessary competencies, but who might be suitable for receiving some reasonable training in order to carry out certain roles.
Emma Williams, the Port’s Head of Human Resources, added: “If people don’t feel that they quite meet the job criteria, please still apply and we will be only too happy to talk with them about how we might be able to offer suitable training for them to succeed in a new role.”
The Port has also mobilised the support of its major contractors to link former P&O Ferries colleagues with a further range of job opportunities in its wider supply chain. These include Securitas (Security), Churchills (cleaning), DMA (building maintenance) and DCB (building contractor).
More widely, the Port is working with its local community partners on further opportunities to offer support over the coming days and weeks. As we know more, we will communicate further.
Doug Bannister concluded: “What we are looking to do is coordinate an overall package of measures to provide as many avenues as possible for those now looking for employment. I genuinely hope that this will, in some way, assist those who now need the help of the wider port community, which we readily give.”
