Following recent additional strengthening and investigation work on Union Street Bridge (the Swingbridge), an updated date for re-opening has been issued.
We recently wrote to stakeholders regarding the requirement to conduct some additional strengthening and investigations works on the Bridge and explained that this would mean there would be the need for a continuation of the temporary closure of the bridge until at least 21st December 2021.
We can report that these works have been successfully carried out, with the main infrastructure now set to be reinstated in early January.
Unfortunately, however, the lead contractor overseeing the project has been advised that current road surfacing contractor availability for resurfacing the bridge, the very last part of the works, has pushed back the re-opening of the bridge to 4th February 2022. This means that the existing traffic diversions will have to remain in place until then. The pedestrian walkways will continue to remain open.
We sincerely apologise for any further inconvenience this may cause, which is regrettably beyond our control, and ask for your continued patience during the last phase of this important project.
